Songs of the Earth and Sea (7th Jul - 8th Sep 2018)
‘Songs of the Earth and Sea', showcases paintings and ceramics by popular Yorkshire artists Sharon Winter and John Egerton, whose work demonstrates a love of nature and the elements.
Sharon Winter
Sharon Winter studied at Scarborough College and graduated with a first class Honours degree in 2001. Her inspiration comes from fairy tales, folklore, memory and family. Sharon works by building up layers of paint, collage and gold leaf to create patterns, motifs and texture.
Sharon and her artist husband David both live and work in Bridlington. The everchanging seas and the concept of town and garden as spaces to live and work in, plus the riches that the earth provide, are very evident in her work.
John Egerton
John Egerton established Sneaton Pottery in 1965 after attending Scarborough and Hornsey London Colleges of Art in the early sixties, producing a wide range of thrown and hand-built ceramics. He worked in earthenware until 1969, then changed to oxidised stoneware, fired in an electric kiln. John enjoys the challenge of using his stock in trade glazes to produce a range of different ceramic effects.
Most of his work is thrown, but he also enjoys the freedom and informality of hand building. He uses the technique of etching through the glaze when first applied to the surface of the pots, finding in nature an endless source of design ideas and textures. He aims to interpret directly onto pots the moorland and coastal scenes that he sees around him in this beautiful part of North Yorkshire.
