Andrew Cheetham

Andrew Cheetham lives and paints in Scarborough close to the picturesque harbour. He is fascinated by the ever-changing colours and moods of this northern landscape - the sea, the cliffs, the fields.

Andrew paints in oils, sometimes on a very small scale, but each painting always carries its own atmosphere and mood.

Elizabeth Barton

Elizabeth Barton has been a potter for several years, making functional pottery in stoneware clay. "These are high-fired and can go in the microwave and dishwasher, although handwashing is preferred," says Elizabeth. "I started off using colourful underglazes and transparent glaze which brought out the vibrant colours of the underglazes."

Elizabeth is currently working with glazes which echo the colours and subtle tones of the Yorkshire landscape. These form part of the current exhibition at Gallery 49 with Andrew Cheetham’s paintings.

"I use both handbuilding and wheelthrown techniques," says Elizabeth. "All glazes used are leadfree and designated as food safe, and are used according to manufacturers instructions, although not laboratory tested by myself."
